Burning a hole into the camera for ninety minutes (minus the carefully weighed clips), Mailer delivers a searing, frequently hilarious monologue that's capable of ripping apart entire Presidential eras with just a few annihilative sentences (anyone who's seen Mailer speak knows he's more electric than almost any professional actor). This is as penetrating a vision of our country as I've ever seen: despite Mailer's stated affection for America, Mailer on Mailer is ultimately a story about crushing disappointment, as a man is forced to accept that his battered country has thrown away its dreams, terminally unable to live up to the promise he thought it'd once held. Could be much longer (the French version is three hours), but required viewing regardless.]

Some typically strong material (e.g. the airplane showdown) strangled by an absolute disaster: Luke, you are my father, i.e. the dumbest, most ruinous plot turn in Gilmore girls' history, made worse since it's executed with a hyena's aplomb (I guess ASP thought a development this hopelessly preposterous deserves an unveiling every bit as contrived). If ASP wants to take jabs at Desperate Housewives' shameless drama manufacturing, she can't be following their lead. Still, "The Prodigal Daughter Returns" might have (almost) been redeemed by a rapturous close. Every jigsaw piece was in place: After a carefully mounted, eight episode lead-in, Lorelai and Rory's reunion should have achieved a wrenching sense of relief. Instead all we get are a few glossy apologies, a hoary 360 degree camera spin, and the feeling ASP suddenly lost her patience, intent on cramming in the rushed reconciliation rather than providing it deserved space. An infuriating disappointment, an ominous harbinger.]
